“The Story Pirates teach kids a love of creative writing. It helps kids to see that their words and ideas are really important. I believe that what the Story Pirates are doing is helping America, nay, humanity - helping humanity itself. It’s crazy entertaining.”
- Jon Stewart, The Daily Show
Story Pirates programs integrate the excitement of theater into standards-based language arts lessons. We present a series of writing workshops, book-ended by all-school assemblies, that showcase students' innate creativity and celebrate their ability as writers. read more
Mainstage Shows
The Story Pirates present a sketch comedy musical based entirely on stories written by elementary schoolers. Our weekly show at the Drama Book Shop in Midtown, Manhattan includes some of the funniest stories we've found by kids all around the country, and always features the debut of at least one new story written by a child author in attendance. Submit your own child's story or check out more info on show times and tickets.
School Shows
Wherever the Story Pirates go, we bring along furry monsters, Viking costumes, flying cats, and sacks of treasure for an experience that shows kids the power of writing in a way they'll never forget. School shows are offered as a part of the larger Play/Write creative writing program, or can be booked a la carte. (more info)
AfterDark Shows
Once a month, the Story Pirates hire a bartender and put on a show for grown-ups only featuring some of the most hilarious and bizarre sketches pulled directly from our school tour. (more info)
Birthday Parties are a big deal to us. That’s because we remember how we felt about them when we were kids. Let us take care of every detail as we put on a show that celebrates your child's own creativity and at the same time has parents rolling in the aisles. We have party options for toddlers through twelve year olds. We've even done adult birthdays! (more info)
Private Classes
Get a group together and give us a call! We work with parents on a per program basis to create customized classes throughout the school year and during the summer. Programs can incorporate elements of drama, puppet making, book making, fine art, poetry, dance and even filmmaking. All students are invited to come watch their work come alive in our weekly Mainstage show, acted out by the Story Pirates. (more info)
School Partnerships
Story Pirates provides extensive after-school enrichment programing in schools and community centers throughout New York and the surrounding areas. For six years, our programs have been an important part of many communities, giving students an extended atmosphere in which to play, write and develop their creativity in a safe and structured environment. Everyone Gets A Song
Everyone's story matters. That's why our material for toddlers is as reverential and non-condescending as our workshops for fifth graders. In our sing-along classes, you won't find the same old songs you've heard a million times; you'll shake to an original ditty about your son's favorite dance move, or do a call and response about the funniest thing your daughter actually said at the dinner table. That's right - at Story Pirates, every child gets his or her own unique song. We debut at least one brand new tune at each session until every child has had a moment in the sun. (more info)
We Travel!
Last year, Story Pirates visited 16 states, bringing assemblies, creative writing programs and a love of literacy to tens of thousands of kids around the country. We partner with schools, libraries, book stores, churches, synagogues and community centers. Regional theaters such as the Kennedy Center and the Geffen Playhouse have included us in their educational theater series. You don't have to be in New York to book the Story Pirates! (more info)
A Lifetime of Stories
Our programs for seniors honor and validate the stories of older adults. Our workshops in assisted living facilities, community centers and theaters provide a powerful outlet for seniors to use their imaginations and communicate their experiences to one another and to their families. At the end of each writing program, Story Pirates present the participants' stories in a performance featuring sketches, songs and dramatic readings.
