author-ana-sofia-harriso "Felicity in the Flower Garden"
August 22, 2009

Ana Sofia woke up one morning. It was a beautiful day so she decided to go outside and work in her garden. Ana Sofia loved her garden; she loved planting flowers, and vegetables. She loved to water them and watch them grow. There were so many plants in her garden; she wished she knew more about all the plants and flowers. One day I’ll learn all the names of the plants in my garden, she told herself.

Ana Sofia was having so much fun in her garden that she wished she could share it with her friends. So that night she asked her mom and dad to help her invite some friends over to play in her garden.

The very next day, several [names?] of Ana Sofia’s friends came to her house to play in her garden. She took them around to each plant, and showed them how she planted seeds from a package, using a small shovel to dig a little hole for each seed. She showed them how she watered the plants with her special watering can. (It was not too large, so she could carry it herself and it was a beautiful shade of purple, because purple was her favorite color).

Ana Sofia and her friends were having a lot of fun; everyone enjoyed being outside on a sunny day and learning how to plant pretty flowers. Ana Sofia was having a lot of fun playing with her friends, but she wished she knew all about the garden so she could share it with her friends.

As Ana Sofia was walking through her garden with her friends, she saw an especially pretty flower at one end of the garden. It was taller than the other plants around it, and she didn’t think she had ever seen it before. So she decided to go over to it and look at it more closely. So she and her friends walked over to the flower. As they got closer, she noticed that it was the most beautiful shade of purple she had ever seen. And indeed, the flower seemed to glow a little bit. I’ve never seen anything like this before, she told herself.

Suddenly, Ana Sofia noticed the flower was moving. The petals were bending up and down, as if somebody was walking on them. As Ana Sofia and her friends watched, a little figure stood up on the flower. It was a little flower fairy.

“Hello,” said the fairy. “Who are you?”

“I’m Ana Sofia,” said Ana Sofia, and these are my friends, “[Names?]. What’s your name? What are you doing on that flower?”

“My name is Felicity,” said the fairy. I live on Flower Mountain. We take care of plants and flowers. Usually no one notices us because we’re very small. The only people who can see us are little girls and boys who love plants. I heard you wishing that you knew more about all the plants in your garden so I came to play with you for a day.”

“It’s very nice to meet you Felicity,” said Ana Sofia. I don’t think I’ve ever met a real live fairy before. Well maybe the tooth fairy, but she comes when I’m asleep.”

Felicity smiled and took a little fairy bow. “Would you like to learn more about the flowers in your garden?”

“Oh yes!” all the children said at once. “We’d love to learn all about flowers.”

So Felicity took the children around the garden. She showed them the flowers that grew early in the spring. She showed them other ones that you had to plant a whole year before and wait until something grew. She told them how to take care of plants and how to watch bees drink nectar. She told them about all kinds of wonderful things.

Everyone was having so much fun, that nobody noticed it was getting cloudy. All of a sudden Ana Sofia felt a drop of water on her arm, then another, then another. Soon it was raining cats and dogs. The rain had come up so fast that nobody had a chance to run for shelter.

Just as suddenly, the rain stopped, and the clouds went away. Ana Sofia and her friends were very wet. But wettest of all was Felicity.

“Oh my dear,” said Felicity worriedly. “My wings are soaked. I can’t fly with wet wings.”

“Oh no,” said Ana Sofia, “what can we do to help Felicity? She can’t fly until her wings dry off!”

“I have a plan,” said Felicity. “I’m going to call some of my friends, the hummingbirds. They’ll be able to help.”

So Felicity called out in Fairy language. And soon Ana Sofia and her friends heard the a buzzing sound. The sound go louder and louder. Ana Sofia looked up and saw a small group of tiny colorful birds hovering in the air above her and her friends. Their wings were flapping so fast you could barely see them. And the buzzing sound was really loud. Now I understand why people call them “Humming birds” Ana Sofia said to herself. It’s because their wings make so much noise.

Felicity asked the birds to fly directly above her and flap their wings so that the air blew against her. In no time at all, Felicity as all dry again and her wings were ready for flying. Ana Sofia and her friend’s clothes were dry too. The sun was out again and everyone was happy.

Now that her wings were dry, Felicity asked Ana Sofia if she and her friends wanted to go on an adventure with her. “Would you like to visit Flower Mountain?” She asked them? She took out her little magic fairy wand. “I might have to turn you into fairies so we can get there and back quickly. Do you think you’d like to become fairies like me for a little while?”

Ana Sofia and her friends all said yes! They couldn’t believe their ears. What a great adventure.

So Felicity took out some magic fairy dust and waved her magic wand. “Abracadabra, Hocus pocus” she said. And suddenly Ana Sofia and her friends started to get smaller. Soon they were all fairy size and everyone had fairy wings, too.

“Hey this is fun!” said Ana Sofia. She and her friends started to play air tag.

“I know it’s fun to be a fairy” said Felicity. I see you all learned how to fly very quickly. Now let’s go.

And soon they were on Flower Mountain. Felicity showed them all the special flowers that grew there. She told them how to tell when a flower was going to blossom and when the nectar was especially sweet, so bees would visit it. She taught them how to talk to birds and how to tell when plants were thirsty and needed water.

Finally, Felicity said. “It’s getting late. I think we should go back now” So they all flew back to Ana Sofia’s garden. Felicity waved her magic wand one more time and everyone grew back to their original size.

“And now it’s time to say goodbye,” Felicity told them. “But remember, flower fairies can hear the wishes of little children when they want to learn more about plants and flowers. So maybe we’ll meet again some time.”

Felicity then said goodbye and went home to Flower Mountain. Ana Sofia and her friends said goodbye to each other and they all went back to their homes too.

When Ana Sofia got home she told her mom and dad what a wonderful day she had had. She told them about all her adventures and what she had learned. After dinner and a nice warm bath, her mother and father tucked her into bed. They kissed her goodnight, and then Ana Sofia drifted off to sleep, filled with happy thoughts about how much fun she had had with her friends and the fairy from Flower mountain.
