Play. Write. Create.

“I can honestly say that the Story Pirates are the most popular, even beloved, group we have worked with - the children, the administration, the teachers and the parents all rave about the troupe.  Dozens upon dozens of kids submit stories for Story Pirate consideration and they all view writing in a much more favorable light after spending time with the Pirates."
- Stuart Miller, P.T.A. President, PS 107 Brooklyn

Based on the core values of Writer's Workshop and aligned with State Standards for Drama and English Language Arts, Story Pirates curriculum is designed to spark young people's imaginations and give them the confidence to call themselves writers.

Our approach is substantive yet playful; Story Pirates teaching artists use drama in the classroom to inspire student's creativity, to help them give form to their ideas, and to make them think about new ways of telling stories.

In addition to being gifted comic performers who bring a sense of play and drama to every element of the workshops, our lead teaching artists have a minimum of three years of experience in the classroom. They work with each school to create a program that supports and enhances the school's own English Language Arts efforts, collaborating closely with the administration and faculty to create the highest possible impact. They are there to help guide the students in creating detailed and appropriate stories, while whenever possible avoiding imposing their own ideas or editorial comments on the work of the students.

In School Programs

Play/Write, the cornerstone of Story Pirates programming, integrates the excitement of theater into standards-based language arts lessons. The Story Pirates present a series of writing workshops, book-ended by all-school assemblies, that showcase students' innate creativity and celebrate their ability as writers. read more

After-School Programs

School Partnerships
Story Pirates provides extensive after-school enrichment programing in schools and community centers throughout New York and the surrounding areas. For six years, our programs have been an important part of many communities, giving students an extended opportunity in which to play, write and develop their creativity in a safe and structured environment. Private Classes
Get a group together and give us a call! We work with parents on a per program basis to create customized classes throughout the school year and during the summer. Programs can incorporate elements of drama, puppet making, book making, fine art, poetry, dance and even filmmaking. All students are invited to come watch their work come alive in our weekly Mainstage show, acted out by the Story Pirates. (more info)

Toddler Classes

Everyone Gets A Song
Everyone's story matters. That's why our material for toddlers is as reverential and non-condescending as our workshops for fifth graders. In our sing-along classes, you won't find the same old songs you've heard a million times; you'll shake to an original ditty about your son's favorite dance move, or do a call and response about the funniest thing your daughter actually said at the dinner table. That's right - at Story Pirates, every child gets his or her own unique song. We debut at least one brand new tune at each session until every child has had a moment in the sun. (more info)

National Tours

We Travel!
Last year, Story Pirates visited 16 states, bringing assemblies, creative writing programs and a love of literacy to tens of thousands of kids around the country. We partner with schools, libraries, book stores, churches, synagogues and community centers. Regional theaters such as the Kennedy Center and the Geffen Playhouse have included us in their educational theater series. You don't have to be in New York to book the Story Pirates! (more info)
