"It's the best assembly I've seen in 22 years of teaching."
-Jenny Howland, The School at Columbia University
Play/Write, the cornerstone of Story Pirates programming, integrates the excitement of theater into standards-based language arts lessons. The Story Pirates present a series of writing workshops, book-ended by all-school assemblies, that showcase students' innate creativity and celebrate their ability as writers.
Greatest Hits - Play/Write begins with an hour-long assembly performance of the Story Pirates Greatest Hits Show: all original material written by children and adapted for the stage by professional actors.
Writing Workshops - In a series of subsequent creative writing and drama workshops led by Story Pirates teaching artists, students explore elements of storytelling as they write about and act out the topics they care about most. The curriculum is designed to spark the imaginations of the students, to help them give form to their ideas, and to help them think about new ways of telling stories. The teachers are there to guide the students in creating detailed and appropriate stories, while avoiding imposing their own ideas or editorial comments on the work of the students.
New Story Show - The culmination of the program is a second, unique one-hour performance. This New Story Show features brand new stories written by program participants and performed by the Story Pirates.
