Education Programs

“It’s the best assembly I’ve seen in 22 years of teaching.”

-Jenny Howland, The School at Columbia University

The Greatest Hits Show

Story Pirates has a variety of school programs, the best for a one-time assembly being the Story Pirates Greatest Hits Show: all original material written by children and adapted for the stage by professional actors. A collection of some of the best stories and songs adapted from stories written by elementary school students, Story Pirates will delight and surprise with puppets, enlivening songs and outrageous sketches, all the while motivating kids to pick up a pencil and write down their own fantastic adventures.  Story topics run the gamut, from kung fu ninja babies fighting crime and the eternal love between the devil and some guy she met at Starbucks, to cats flying and tickle monsters who rule the world.

Idea Storm Program

The Idea Storm Program has two parts. The Idea Storm assembly is a creative writing master class, a hilarious improv show, and a pep rally, all at once.  Story Pirates teaching artists and performers take suggestions from the audience to create stories on the spot, while helping students identify key elements of composition and narrative structure, such as plot, character, obstacles and resolution.  With an emphasis on creative problem solving and non-violent conflict resolution, the Idea Storm assembly leaves students with the tools to start writing and the excitement to let their imagination take the lead. Each Idea Storm includes story prompt handouts for each students. The students then write stories on their own or in their classes, 4 of which are performed several weeks later in a New Story Show for the entire school!

Play/Write Program

The Play/Write Program integrates the excitement of theater into standards-based language arts lessons. The Story Pirates present a series of writing workshops, book-ended by all-school assemblies, that showcase students’ innate creativity and celebrate their ability as writers.

Story Pirates Greatest Hits Show – The Play/Write Program kicks off with the Greatest Hits Show: all original material written by children and adapted for the stage by professional actors.

Writing Workshops - In a series of subsequent creative writing and drama workshops led by Story Pirates teaching artists, students explore elements of storytelling as they write about and act out the topics they care about most. The curriculum is designed to spark the imaginations of the students, to help them give form to their ideas, and to help them think about new ways of telling stories. The teachers are there to guide the students in creating detailed and appropriate stories, while avoiding imposing their own ideas or editorial comments on the work of the students.

New Story Show - The culmination of the program is a second, unique one-hour performance. This New Story Show features brand new stories written by program participants and performed by the Story Pirates.
