The Story Pirates work with children at over 100 schools and community organizations from all neighborhoods, races, and socio-economic levels. The majority of our programs serve children in low-income, culturally diverse populations. These children are challenged by disadvantaged learning environments both at school and at home. The majority are from families of color, and most qualify for free or reduced-price lunch under the Title 1 Federal meal program (as high as 89% in some schools).
These schools are chronically under-funded, and it goes without saying that, as budgets are tightened, enrichment programming is too often the first to go. Over the past year, budgets at New York City’s public schools have been decreased by as much as $450,000. In the aftermath of these cuts, it is more important than ever to find supplemental funding that will keep the Play/Write Program running in the schools where it is strongly needed.
The cost of a Story Pirates school program typically runs between $1000 - $8,000. We strive to match every dollar raised through the Adopt-A-School program with other funding sources to maximize the effect of your contribution and to bring the highest quality arts education to children who need it most.
